History of Saint Benilde International School

Fourteen years ago, Mr. Victorio Medalla suggested to the owner and now school president, Mr. Wilfredo L. Opulencia, to expand business by putting up a school since during that time there were only few private schools in the vicinity. A project study of the place was then immediately conducted by a group composed of Dr. Juanita Santos, a professor in the Graduate Studies of Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST), Mr. Victorino Medalla himself and a number of Project Engineers.

The project study was completed later in the same year. A meeting with the group, together with Mr. Wilfredo L. Opulencia, was then convened in Calamba Allied Industrial Corporation, another business property of the Opulencias.

It was then announced that the project was feasible in the area (Opulencia Compound, Crossing, Calamba City, Laguna).

In 2002, all required documents pertinent to putting up the school were filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and to the Department of Education.

Among the names considered to bear the school name were Calamba Academy and Saint Benilde Academy. Benilde was used in memory of the school owner’s great great grandmother whose name was Benilda. None of the names however, was approved by the SEC since the names have been used in or are close to the school names used in Metro Manila. It was then that the Saint Benilde Academy was modified to Saint Benilde International School (Calamba), Inc.

In June 4, 2002, the SEC granted the Certificate of Incorporation to Saint Benilde International School. The Department of Education released the approved papers to operate the said institution.

Saint Benilde International School (Calamba), Inc. opened its doors to the community in June 2003 with 120 students composed of Nursery, Kinder Preparatory, and Grade 1 and 2. The school started with seven classrooms, a computer room, and a library. Seven hardworking and dedicated teachers catered to the needs of the students. To live up to its name as an international school and as per DepEd requirement, SBIS offered Mandarin for preschool and Elementary levels and Nihongo for the Secondary Level as its elective subjects.

At Present, SBIS is true to its words that it is a school where it shapes the future of its students by providing the clientele excellent quality and affordable education
